I first want to say congratulations to those of you who were recently accepted to the University of Michigan! Getting into college should feel incredibly rewarding, knowing that all of your time spent preparing for this has paid off.
The University of Michigan’s LSA college is the largest on campus, and it can feel daunting to be part of a big crowd. That’s in part why I joined the RC. I recently finished my third semester in the program, and it has been my most rewarding experience so far.
My favorite part of this past semester (and this college) has been the RC Players, a student-run theater club with access to the RC’s incredible resources and venue. My freshman year was my first time in theater since middle school, and I’m happy to say that my love for the art has only grown since then. While you don’t have to be an RC student to join, I’ve found that living in the RC makes it easier for me to participate in theater.
For the Fall of 2022, I was an assistant director for our Evening of Things and for our shadow cast for the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and played Pentheus in our production of Bakkhai. Every show I’ve been in has been an amazing collaborative effort between the cast and crew, and every show I’m proud of the work we put into the experience. The RC Players continue to inspire and support me in my life, as I am figuring out what I want to do with my time in college and in the future.
I love getting to meet new students this year through theater and I hope I can inspire them to create more amazing shows with us. While I understand theater might not be everyone’s cup of tea, I think student clubs are an integral part of Michigan college life and one everyone should take advantage of sooner or later.
