"Relational Geometries: Space, Place, and Minimalist Aesthetics in the Work of Leo Valledor and Carlos Villa"
This dissertation centers the work of Filipino-American artists Leo Valledor and Carlos Villa. Both San Francisco-based artists, Valledor and Villa were cousins, friends, and artist-interlocutors. This project traces their respective usages of minimalist and reductive aesthetic strategies to engage with histories of space and place in their hometown of San Francisco. Their artworks use conceptual, visual, and physical space to problematize prevailing notions of center and periphery on local, national, and transnational scales. In doing so, Valledor and Villa envision new modes of relation and offer models for a more expansive understanding of American modernism.
