For Student Interns

Spend your summer interning at a Japanese company! These internships provide invaluable opportunities to cultivate your professional skills, expand your repertoire in multicultural work environments, and further explore your interests in Japanese language and culture.

Eligibility

• U-M graduate and undergraduate students in good academic standing
• Returning to U-M for the fall semester following your spring/summer internship; graduating seniors are ineligible. 

Timeline

• September – November: Employers provide internship descriptions  
• October – mid-January: Student application period 
• Late January: Employers receive and review applications  
• February: Candidates selected for interviews 
• March: Intern placements confirmed. Interns work with employers and support staff to determine logistics and on-site planning for internship
  
• April: Pre-departure orientation, health & safety sessions
• May – August: Internship period  

Requirements

Students accepted for internships through this program must adhere to the following:

• Completion of internship conditions as agreed upon with the employer. Internships typically span a length of 6-8 weeks between May and August for 25-40 hours per week, though exact dates and contact hours are determined by the employer in collaboration with the student intern. Exceptions may be made in case of emergency.
• Timely communication with CJS support staff, including regular check-in and post-internship reflections
• Participation in required pre-departure orientation and health & safety information sessions
• Appropriate behavior in line with the U-M Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities and all applicable federal, state, and local laws

• A one page, tailored cover letter explaining why you are interested in working for this organization, and how this internship fits in with your overall career goals

Funding

Note that not all internship positions are paid. It is the intern’s responsibility to cover work and living expenses for their internship that are not provided by the employer. Visit our Internship Funding page to find information on available scholarships and fellowships for internships.
