CGIS First Step Sessions

First Step sessions are a great opportunity to learn more about the application process prior to meeting with an advisor. You can learn about all of our study abroad programs and international internships around the world, scholarships and other financial aid resources, the CGIS application process, and more! 

Students may reach out to CGIS at cgis@umich.edu to schedule a First Step session or they can watch a recorded First Step session here. 

Attending a First Step session is not a required component of the CGIS application process. However, we do highly encourage students to start with a First Step session to get an overview of our variety of global opportunities, the process, and other vaulable tips!

Please note: All types of international opportunities are available through M-Compass. CGIS programs have our acronym "CGIS" in the program title. 

When selecting an intercultural experience, it is important for students to consider their personal, academic, and professional goals. Whether you hope to improve language skills, meet academic requirements, develop professional skills, or just step outside your comfort zone, each CGIS global opportunity offers unique benefits. Identifying objectives and expectations before beginning the search for a study abroad program or international internship will help you select appropriate intercultural experiences.

After exploring the variety of CGIS international opportunities, you can schedule an individual appointment with a CGIS advisor to assess your goals, identify the right programs/internships for you, and assist you through the application process. Please view our Advising page to understand what questions to ask and who to meet with. 

After meeting with a CGIS advisor, you should also discuss with your academic advisors how study abroad courses and/or international internship seminars can help fulfill degree requirements.
