Where did you transfer from? University of Michigan-Flint
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan? I chose to transfer to the University of Michigan because of the endless opportunities, both academic and professional. The University offers countless resources designed to support students in every way, an incredible variety of classes to choose from, and professors who are highly recognized in their fields. On top of that, the vibrant and diverse campus community makes you feel right at home.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students? You don’t have to figure everything out in your first semester. This is a big transition, and it takes time to feel fully adjusted in all aspects. Remember that there are many more transfer students than you might realize, so if you ever feel alone or out of place, you can always come to the Transfer Center and talk with someone who has already gone through the process. Finding people you can relate to makes the experience much easier.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus? I met some of my best friends during transfer orientation, and we would always bring along new people we met. I also made friends through the clubs I joined, since shared interests are one of the best ways to connect with others. Finally, I found that class is a great place to meet people too, sitting next to someone new and starting a conversation is very normal, and those small interactions can turn into friendships that make class feel a lot less lonely.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student? My favorite part about being an LSA transfer student is how supportive the college is throughout the entire transition, from the application process to life on campus. There is a large transfer community, and through events and resources it becomes much easier to meet others who share similar experiences. I also appreciate how the curriculum allows you to explore a wide range of interests, which helps you build a well-rounded education that prepares you for success.
What do you know now that you wish you had known before transferring to the University of Michigan? One thing I wish I had known before transferring is how welcoming the U-M community is. Students come from so many different backgrounds, which makes it easy to find a community you can connect with. Professors are also very approachable and willing to help, even in large classes. And with about 20% of the new student population being transfers, you are definitely not alone; there are many students who have gone through the same transition.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)? I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers, and when I was first exposed to economics in high school, I realized it offered the perfect balance between hard skills and soft skills. In economics, you need to understand people’s behavior in order to interpret or predict the numbers, and that really captured everything I wanted to do. I also like that the skills you gain as an econ major open up many different career paths to pursue.
