RCGD Fall Seminar Series: The Social Pyschology of Systemic Racism (Nick Camp)

Title TBA
Monday, September 16, 2024
3:30-5:00 PM
1430 Institute For Social Research Map
Nick Camp, series organizer, kicks off the series, "The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism," on Sept. 16. The event will be in-person at ISR Thompson 1430.

Events in this series run Mondays from 3:30 to 5. As permissions allow, seminars are later posted to our YouTube playlist.

Nick Camp studies the social psychology of racial inequality, focusing on where institutions and individuals come into contact. His main program of research examines the role routine police-citizen encounters play in undermining police-community trust, and how these disparities can be addressed, combining analyses of officer-worn body camera footage with community surveys. In other research, he examines the psychological consequences of racial inequities for how individuals consider people, places, and policies.

About this series:
What are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what, in their words, makes systemic racism systemic, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods.

About the Group Dynamics Seminar Series:
The Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The series runs every semester around a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s from the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization, cultural psychology, and evolution & human behavior.
