Research & Scholarship

Colleges and universities have critical roles in creating a more inclusive and equitable society. As higher education institutions increase in diversity of faculty, staff, and students, these institutions are positioned to foster a generation of leading scholars who will generate new social understandings and develop engaged citizens who will contribute positively to a diverse society. The NCID offers specific expertise on complex issues of diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education, producing knowledge and applications that can be engaged within a diverse range of college/university institutions, as well as other organizational and social settings. Beyond NCID’s own research projects, our research agenda includes the engagement of a thriving community of intergenerational diversity scholars and support their research and scholarship. We do this through the administration of the Diversity Scholars Network and by providing resources and opportunities for diversity scholars at the U-M and across the nation. Through this approach, we acknowledge the experts in various fields and topics and support their work as exemplar models for individuals and institutions working towards creating a more equitable society.

A core component of our research agenda is to ensure knowledge is effectively disseminated to inform and address a given issue. All NCID research projects include a dissemination strategy. In addition to disseminating our own findings, the NCID engages with scholars to promote their work and provides support in developing dissemination strategies. Furthermore, we develop trainings and resources for scholars to gain the skills and capacities to disseminate their work broadly and inform a public for whom it matters.

Research about diversity, equity and inclusion is often at the margins. The NCID has launched a social media campaign that highlights the work of diversity scholars and supports a growing community of scholars and the advancement of their work. Through this campaign, we hope to:

• Promote diversity scholars and their work and for stakeholders to identify these scholars
• Create a virtual community among diversity scholars; and
• Develop and curate content that will promote and advance the work of diversity scholars.
