IPAMAA offers students a structured, yet flexible, course of study that requires training in ancient history and in both ancient and modern languages, as well as a central emphasis on the art history and archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. A combination of course work and examinations during the first three years prepares students for undertaking original doctoral-level research in the later stages of the Program (which most students complete in about 7 years). While a Ph.D. is the ultimate goal of those admitted into IPAMAA, many individuals also take additional degrees (M.A.s or Certificates) in cognate fields.
IPAMAA students are provided with research space, access to computer facilities, and library resources in the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. The Kelsey is also a base for active IPAMAA involvement in both museum activities and fieldwork undertaken by Michigan faculty members.
