By undertaking coursework additional to that stipulated for their Ph.D. in Classical Art & Archaeology, the majority of IPAMAA students satisfy the requirements to earn Certificates or Master’s-level degrees. (Anywhere from 15 to 36 extra credit hours may be required.) These extra degrees are not mandatory, but they can significantly broaden and enhance one’s professional qualifications.
The University of Michigan offers an array of excellent opportunities for such ancillary degrees. Current and recent IPAMAA students have opted to satisfy the requirements for the M.A. in Greek or Latin, or have pursued a Master’s degree or Certificate from among a range of other disciplines that speak to their particular research interests in areas as diverse as Urban Planning, Museum Studies, Women’s Studies, History of Art, and Greek & Roman History. The M.A. in Classical Art & Archaeology is awarded only as an interim degree to students enrolled in the IPAMAA Ph.D. program; it can usually be earned after four semesters in residence, and a minimum of 30 hours are required. It is not a separate degree program to which a student can apply for admission.
Bridge MA in Classical Studies
The Bridge M.A. in Classical Studies is a fully funded, three semester program designed to assist promising students in Classical Studies, Ancient Philosophy, Ancient History, or Greek and Roman Archaeology in developing the Ancient Greek and Latin language skills needed to pursue a Ph.D. in Classical Studies.
Exceptional students with demonstrated potential for graduate study will gain research, language, and teaching experience while interacting with other graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty through one-on-one meetings, seminars, and research symposia.
