The University of Michigan has a long and varied tradition of archaeological fieldwork in the Mediterranean and Near East, ranging back to the days of the pioneering project launched by Francis W. Kelsey at Karanis in the Fayum, Egypt. IPAMAA students at present work and study in a wide range of settings — from the Classical heartlands of Greece and Italy, to Romania, Turkey, Georgia, Israel, Egypt, Sudan, and Afghanistan.
IPAMAA students also routinely learn about museum practices and engage with issues of public presentation and outreach, through internships at other institutions, through work on exhibits in the Kelsey Museum itself, and (since 2003) by studying for the highly-successful Certificate in Museum Studies. Student publication of material in the Kelsey holdings is also encouraged.
