The Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia (WCEE) together with the Center for Education Design, Evaluation, and Research (CEDER) at the University of Michigan have developed curricular materials for educators to teach about the war in Ukraine and build knowledge about complex issues such as war crimes, genocide, human rights, and sovereignty. The materials are also meant for students to develop a variety of analytical skills.

The package includes a detailed teaching guide and student exercises, assignments, and projects that use the online archive and interactive maps created by WCEE based on witness testimonies collected by The Reckoning Project. All teaching materials are available free of charge on the WCEE website. Download here.

“Public outreach and education is a critical part of our collaboration with the Reckoning Project, an international NGO dedicated to collecting testimonies from witnesses and victims of war crimes in Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022,” remarked WCEE Director Professor Geneviève Zubrzycki. “We hope that these teaching materials will be used in classrooms across the country, as it is imperative for students to better understand not only the war in Ukraine, but other global conflicts and related issues.”

These materials were designed for use in high school classrooms but can be easily adapted for college-level courses. Specifically-designed higher education materials will be released soon. Sign up for updates.

CEDER Design Coordinator Darin Stockdil shared that, “These interactive and inquiry-driven materials were developed with input from high school World History teachers. They are aligned with Michigan Social Studies high school content expectations focused on global issues and policy debates, as well as with English Language Arts expectations regarding reading informational texts. The activities also provide students with opportunities to develop critical thinking and media literacy skills as they consider pressing ethical issues regarding war crimes in the 21st century.”
