“Living in Belfast, a city with such a rich, inspiring, and at times saddening history, was a wonderful experience. Every day felt like a new lesson in how perspectives can differ between individuals and ways to overcome these differences to develop peace. In Belfast, I saw firsthand what division can look like, but I also had the joy of witnessing the power and fragility of peacebuilding. The individuals I worked with and spoke to throughout my time there are truly dedicated to seeing their communities thrive by developing tolerance and limiting division.
My biggest takeaway from this experience is that, although international law can seem very abstract, in practice, dedicated advocates and lawyers with ties to the issues at hand can exact concrete change for the better. I am grateful to have witnessed the devotion of advocates in Northern Ireland and learn more about their experiences in the field of human rights. In Belfast, I learned firsthand the political and historical issues facing Northern Ireland and the UK and gained crucial experience in humanitarian and international law, which I hope to carry forward in my future career.”
