The Donia Human Rights Center supports various student organizations across the University of Michigan campus engaging with international human rights issues.
Blue Model United Nations (blueMUN)
Blue Model United Nations (blueMUN) is the competitive Model United Nations team at the University of Michigan. Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations, where students represent members of the international community (countries, organizations, politicians), and work together to resolve world issues in their respective committees. blueMUN provides undergraduate students of all ages from all majors the opportunity to learn about global politics. They compete in collegiate Model UN conferences across the country, engaging with pressing international and historical issues via simulated debate.
Human Rights Advocates (HRA)
Human Rights Advocates (HRA) is a student-led organization that promotes awareness of human rights issues through speakers, films, and volunteer work. HRA's volunteer work is notable in that it connects Michigan Law students with real opportunities to perform human rights work during all three years of law school through diverse pro bono projects. These include Michigan Law initiatives such as the Syrian Accountability Project (SAP) and Human Rights Advocates International Grassroots Advocacy Project (Int GAP), as well as opportunities through outside organizations. In addition to regular events and activities, HRA serves as a community for students, alumni, and practitioners to discuss human rights issues, develop projects, and find jobs and internships.
Michigan Journal of International Affairs (MJIA)
MJIA was founded as a completely student-run, undergraduate publication at the University of Michigan. Each semester, MJIA publishes opinion-based pieces pertaining to international affairs in the areas of politics, history, economics, and culture. Writers author pieces across five different regions (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East) and are actively involved in the entire process, from editing to final distribution. MJIA also serves as a platform for discussions concerning global affairs, and every year the Journal organizes panel meetings to analyze a specific international issue from the past few months.
United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) at the University of Michigan
The United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) works in over 190 countries and territories to save children's lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfill their potential, from early childhood through adolescence. UNICEF at the University of Michigan plays a powerful role in this mission. As one of the 120 active Campus Initiative Clubs across the country, members of the UNICEF chapter at the University of Michigan conduct education, advocacy, fundraising, and service on behalf of UNICEF USA. University of Michigan Asylum Collaborative (UMAC)
The University of Michigan Asylum Collaborative is a non-profit, medical student-run, human rights clinic dedicated to providing free forensic medical evaluations to survivors of persecution seeking asylum in the United States. Founded in 2013 and collaborating extensively with Physicians for Human Rights, UMAC is comprised of a diverse and growing team of volunteer clinicians, medical students, and law students committed to serving asylum seekers as well as educating health professionals and the general public about the asylum process.
