Curator Veerendra Prasad

"South Asian cinema is amazing, and South Asian women have made so many incredible films," said Madhumita Lahiri, CSAS interim director. "By bringing these movies to campus, we are building community around one of the great pleasures of South Asian culture."

This year's series started in September 2024 with Girls Will Be Girls by director Shuchi Talati.

"This past year was a big one for South Asian women on the film festival circuit," said Veerandra Prasad, curator of the film series and screenwriter, director, and lecturer at U-M. "We have a schedule filled with award winners.

"Girls Will Be Girls won an Audience Award at Sundance. Laapatta Ladies (Lost Ladies) has been picked as India's official entry for the Oscars. It felt natural to do a showcase centered on these prominent films."

CSAS has partnered again with the historical Michigan Theater to showcase the South Asian film series, with all films being shown at either the Michigan Theater or the State Theater. All screenings are free and open to the public.

The winter series will include Wakhri, with filmmaker Iram Parveen Bilal, on January 30 to kickoff our Pakistan Conference. Laapataa Ladies, India's official entry into the Oscars, on February 12, and Santosh, written and directed by Sandhya Suri, on March 19, 2025.

All screenings are free and open to the public. Please continue to check the CSAS website for more information.
