PERSONAL STATEMENTS & GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLICATIONS
One of the biggest hurdles for many in the grad school application process is the Personal Statement. This workshop will support you in the writing process. The Personal Statement requires a different form and serves a different function than other forms of professional and academic writing.
Together, with a Hub coach and your peers, we will work together to establish what makes a powerful and effective personal statement.
You should attend this workshop if you are:
A liberal arts and/or sciences (LSA) student
Interested in learning more about the possibility (and realities) of grad school
Deciding if advanced study is a step you want to take
Curious about what writing a Personal Statement entails (i.e what even is it?)
Looking for some guidance for assessing if your Personal Statement is aligned with your interests and goals
What you’ll gain by attending:
Insight into best practices when writing a Personal Statement from various perspectives
Understanding of different requirements and formats for different graduate schools
How to attack the writing process in an order that makes the most sense
Exploring and deciding between your varied experiences to provide schools with a well-rounded portrayal
Discover resources available to you throughout your application process
Identify areas of improvement within your existing personal statement
The Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event is on the first floor of a wheelchair accessible building which includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms on the first floor, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom on the first floor as well, and places to sit or stand during the event. To request other accommodations please contact LSA Hub Events at lsa.hubevents@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.
This workshop is being offered in person and virtually. Please see the occurrence details for registration links for the virtual session.
