Graduate Student Internships

PhD students in Comparative Literature are encouraged to integrate internships into their doctoral program, in order to expand their academic skills and explore opportunities for experiential learning that will enable them to connect the university to the world and prepare for diverse career paths beyond the Phd.

Our graduate students have had success in applying for the Rackham Doctoral Intern Fellowship Program, leading to opportunities to work on projects at the UM Museum of Art, U Michigan Press, the Penny Stamps Gallery, The Michigan Quarterly Review, as well as partner organizations outside the university, such as the Library of Congress.

In addition, since 2018 our department has started funding a number of self-initiated internships proposed by CompLit graduate students, including short-term summer projects and one full academic term internship fellowship every winter semester. Students may earn academic credit by connecting their internships to mini-courses, and they have the flexibility to propose internships as capstone projects in graduate certificate programs.

These are their experiences.

2023 Graduate Student Internship Fellowships

Amanda Kubic was awarded a Comp Lit Academic Term Internship Fellowship in Winter 2023 to work as an intern at Monument Lab, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit public art and history studio.

2022 Graduate Student Internship Fellowships

Duygu Ergun was awarded a CompLit Academic Internship Fellowship for Winter 2022 to pursue work at the Academy of the Arts Archive in Berlin.

Genta Nishku received CompLit funding in 2022 to support her work as a summer internship at the Modern Languages Association.

2021 Graduate Student Internship Fellowships

Alex Aguayo was awarded a Comp Lit Academic Term Internship Fellowship in Winter 2021 to work as editorial intern at Words Without Borders, the online magazine for world literatures in English translation.

Jamie Clegg received CompLit summer internship funding in 2021 to work with a team of women filmmakers on a short documentary about Yoruk tribal members’ efforts to return fire to the land toward cultural, ecological, and spiritual healing.

2020 Graduate Student Internship Fellowships

Adrienne Jacaruso was awarded a Comp Lit Academic Term Internship Fellowship for Winter 2020 at the LSA Language Resource Center.

Imani Cooper Mkandawire received CompLit funding for an internship in spring 2020 at Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn, a multidisciplinary museum.

2019 Graduate Student Internship Fellowship

David Martin translated Spanish documents for asylum cases, in collaboration with the U-M Language Resource Center and the Immigrant Justice Lab (...click photo to read more...)
