Director, Michigan Community Scholars Program
About
Christine Modey is the director of the Michigan Community Scholars Program (MCSP) at the University of Michigan. MCSP is a residential learning community in the College of LSA that equips students for meaningful lives in a multi-racial, multi-religious democracy by offering opportunities for civic engagement, community service, intercultural friendship and understanding, and support for holistic wellbeing. As part of her role in MCSP, she teaches courses about community building and about interfaith understanding. Prior to joining MCSP, she was a faculty member at the Sweetland Center for Writing and the director of the peer writing consultant program from 2015-2020. Outside of her work with MCSP, she is the chair of the Interfaith Round Table of Washtenaw County and a member of Braver Angels Washtenaw County Alliance and has a deep commitment to building meaningful relationships across lines of difference and to conflict resolution grounded in dignity and mutual respect. She is co-editor with David Schoem and Edward St. John of Teaching the Whole Student: Engaged Learning with Heart, Mind, and Spirit and the author of numerous articles about writing center work. She holds degrees in chemistry and English from Hope College (BA) and in English and American Literature from the University of Delaware (MA, PhD).
