Recent graduate Rodrigo Figueroa was recognized with the ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award, granted by the Rackham Graduate School, and the Earth and Environmental Science’s Dissertation Dorr Award. These awards recognize highly accomplished graduate students who have produced exceptional dissertations of outstanding scholarly quality.
Other awards given by the Earth Department include an Academic Excellence Award to Ben Woodmansee, a Golden Star Turner Award to Theodore Matel for his proposal on ‘Holocene Amazonian Paleobiology’, and Outstanding GSI Award to Tariq Abdul Kareem for his years of service at Camp Davis and Geobiology.
Two Rackham Predoctoral Fellowships awarded to our students. These fellowships support outstanding doctoral students working on dissertations that are unusually creative, ambitious, and impactful.

Dissertation: Teleost Fish Evolution in the Cenozoic: New insights from Paleogene Ichthyofaunas from the Eastern Desert of Egypt.
Jerónimo Morales-Toledo
Dissertation: Evolutionary and ecological insights from fruits of extinct and extant Araceae.
Additionally, former UMMP grad James Saulsbury received a KU Research Achievement Award from the University of Kansas. James is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Kansas.
