Arwa Raza, BS, 2017

Field of Study: BS in Interdisciplinary Physics and Middle East Studies - Arabic, Religion

Graduation Year: 2017

I am graduating with a B.S. in Physics and Middle East Studies. I came to college with the intention of minoring in religions of the Middle East, but I realized I was passionate about languages and really wanted to learn another one. The MES major allowed me to concentrate in Arabic and Religion to fulfill both of these interests. The Arabic language track has really carried me far. It prompted me to pursue a summer volunteer opportunity in Morocco where I was able to live with a family and learn a lot about the local culture. Though it was a difficult language and the courses were a lot of work, they really pushed me to work hard and internalize the process of learning and speaking another language. Along with the courses in religion, I feel I am now better able to empathize with others and understand how culture molds thinking. I intend to take some time off after graduation and apply to medical school soon. I really think that these skills will help me be a better physician to understand my patients and care for them. Furthermore, I hope to be able to use my language skills in the future by going abroad and treating patients in areas of the Middle East where medical care is lacking and greatly needed.
