The Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology (IPAMAA) offers a program of doctoral study in the visual and material culture of the ancient Mediterranean world. Sponsored by the Department of Classical Studies, the Department of the History of Art, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, IPAMAA draws on an interdisciplinary faculty body and on the rich museum and library resources of the University of Michigan. IPAMAA students have the opportunity to participate in museum exhibitions and archaeological field projects directed by UM faculty, and they write dissertations on subjects ranging from Aegean prehistory to late antiquity.

IPAMAA's logo, which features a mythological sea monster, is based on an image in a fragment of a Roman wall painting, acquired from Puteoli in 1923, and now in the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology (KM 2802). The marine motif emphasizes IPAMAA’s Mediterranean focus, while the “hybrid” quality of the sea monster serves as a metaphor for the interdisciplinary character of the program.
