Summer 2020 Internships for U-M Students
A number of regional partner organizations hosted summer internships for University of Michigan undergraduates with an interest in Great Lakes related issues. Applications were screened by the GLTS Team, which then forwarded materials of qualified applicants to our partners who made final hiring decisions.
Following are the original internship descriptions provided by our partners:

Detroit Historical Society - This internship, which will involve processing glass-plate photographs of early 20th-century Great Lakes ships from an important collection at the Detroit Historical Museum, offers an opportunity to develop practical skills in museum studies and archive management.

Detroit Public Television- Come work for WTVS Detroit Public Television (DPTV), the viewer-supported PBS member station serving the nation's 11th largest television market. DPTV produces local programs that showcase culture, news and analysis. Interns will work in areas such as Instagram account management, digital video production, news reporting, digital asset creation, digital marketing, digital content management, and visual archiving.

Flagship Niagara League - Join the Flagship Niagara League as a Social Media/Digital Marketing Intern and sail on the Brig Niagara for 2-3 months on the Great Lakes. The Brig Niagara seeks an intern to become part of the ship’s crew and capture the experience of sailing on the ship in words and images for social media.

For Love of Water (FLOW) - This Communications Intern position will involve work on a narrative story-telling project aimed at informing and educating the public on critical Great Lakes issues and solutions.

Inland Seas Education Association - The shipboard Science Education Intern delivers educational programming on shore and aboard our traditionally rigged schooners for people of all ages. The intern helps develop ISEA programming, completes tasks that support the education activities of ISEA, and participates in ship operations as needed.The 2020 season will include delivering programs primarily based out of Suttons Bay and Traverse City, MI.

National Wildlife Federation - This intern will assist the Federation and the Great Lakes Business Network develop a new regional accountability and advocacy tool that outlines how state and provincial governments along Lake Erie should take action to reduce nutrient runoff into its major tributaries.

Maritime Heritage Alliance - The Maritime Heritage Alliance is offering two internships:
The Marketing and Outreach intern will join MHA volunteers sailing its fleet of historic vessels on West Grand Traverse Bay and gain hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing and communications using video, social media, and print advertising as well as document restoration.
The Youth Sailing intern will work alongside MHA’s captain and volunteers to plan, coordinate and implement challenge-based learning activities designed to teach participants sailing and maritime history skills, as well as teamwork, trust, and self-confidence.

MLive Environmental Desk - Are you interested in writing about environmental issues across Michigan? Come work with environmental reporters at MLive Media Group, the #1 news and information site in Michigan. Mickey Ciokajlo, Regional News Manager, will supervise the intern selected for this position. The intern can work out of either the Ann Arbor or Kalamazoo office.
