Maya Sudarkasa is a rising 6th year History PhD candidate, at the University of Michigan, studying long 19th century United States social and intellectual history, with a specialization in African American history and Black World Studies. Her dissertation as a whole aims to map a growing Pan-African discourse in the United States, Greater France, and South Africa through the turn of the twentieth century. In her project, she examines the writings and activities of a few key Afro-descendant women, including Anna Julia Cooper, Paulette and Jeanne “Jane” Nardal, and Charlotte Maxeke.
Sudarkasa plans to continue with the drafting of her dissertation analytical chapters. Her dissertation as a whole aims to map a growing Pan-African discourse in the United States, Greater France, and South Africa through the turn of the twentieth century.
