2025-26 Residency Research Fellow
About
Matthew Bahar is associate professor of history at Oberlin College. His research interests lie at the intersection of American Indian, imperial, and maritime history in colonial North America. He is the author of Storm of the Sea: Indians & Empires in the Age of Sail (Oxford University Press, 2019), an Atlantic history of the Wabanaki Indians of northern New England and the Canadian Maritimes, from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.
During his fellowship, Professor Bahar will be working on his next monograph project, “American Discovery: Natives, Newcomers, and Missing Persons in the Early Southeast.” The project explores the experiences of diverse European, African, and Indigenous people who went missing in a new world during the first three centuries of European exploration and settlement.
