About
Irene Mora is a PhD candidate in the History and Women's and Gender Studies program. Her dissertation is titled "City Mothers: Latina-led Community Formations in Detroit, 1920-1980" and explores the long history of Detroit’s Latinos/as and documents their roles in building and revitalizing the Motor City. She emphasizes Latinas’ contributions by placing them at the forefront of Detroit's twentieth-century historical narrative, showing how they resisted and challenged patriarchal structures, Mexican repatriation, education inequality, and urban decline to develop and preserve their communities. She argues that in Detroit longstanding traditions of Latina care work evolved into a robust movement of community-oriented activism that produced an infrastructure of care to support the Latino/a community.
During her fellowship year at the Eisenberg Institute, Mora will continue work on her dissertation and plans to edit one of her chapters and submit it to an academic journal. She looks forward to collaborating with the Eisenberg fellows cohort and helping to lead Eisenberg events.
