About
Gregory Smith is associate professor of ancient Mediterranean history at Central Michigan University. After serving as chair of CMU’s Department of History from 2016 to 2022, he has been the chair of the new Department of History, World Languages, and Cultures since fall 2022. Trained as a medievalist, Byzantinist, and historian of Roman and late antiquity, he specializes in cultural and intellectual history, focusing on the history of science, medicine, magic, and anthropology in the Greek and Roman world from Homer to Heraclius.
Professor Smith's research project is a book entitled, "Body, Soul, and Spirits in the Roman World: An Attenuated History." He will use his research leave and fellowship to finish the book while expanding its attention to ancient Greek sources as they relate to ideas about body, soul, demons, and the stars.
