U-M innovators Chaio Lin and Anhua Wu founded Mixel Studio, which specializes in extended reality (XR) to create immersive learning systems. The flagship platform is called OXR for Workforce Training. This virtual 3D space lets students participate in spatial learning—practicing hands-on skills without real-world implications.
The trick was creating a product that instructors could use to teach many students at once. For Lin, DSI faculty member Rebecca Quintana’s course on XR and education was vital in providing him with the language to articulate what he was working on: classroom orchestration. What makes OXR unique is its ability to sync with multiple devices.
Wu explained that while every startup right now seems to be building AI to automate tasks, Mixel Studio does the opposite: it wants to enhance human-to-human interaction. Bringing their project full-circle, Lin and Wu brought OXR back into Quintana’s classroom, allowing students to design and deliver their own XR lessons.
