Nakamura Exceptional Teaching (NET) Award

The Nakamura Exceptional Teaching (NET) Award is presented annually by the Digital Studies Institute to recognize faculty who demonstrate outstanding innovation and/or service through the teaching of Digital Studies courses.

Named in honor of Professor Lisa Nakamura, the founding director of the Digital Studies Institute, the award celebrates her legacy of interdisciplinary scholarship and commitment to excellence in teaching. The NET Award recognizes educators whose courses inspire critical inquiry, foster inclusive and innovative learning environments, and advance the mission of Digital Studies.

Recipients receive a commemorative award, $1,000 in research funding, and are recognized on a perpetual plaque displayed in the Digital Studies Institute (DSI).

Eligibility

Faculty members who teach Digital Studies courses at the University of Michigan are eligible for nomination for the NET Award.

Nomination Process

Each year, the DSI invites nominations from the Digital Studies community. The DSI welcomes self-nominations as well as nominations made on behalf of a colleague.

A faculty review committee evaluates nominees based on their demonstrated excellence in teaching and their contributions to the Digital Studies curriculum. 

The committee considers evidence of teaching excellence, including innovative pedagogy, inclusive and accessible teaching practices, thoughtful course design, meaningful student engagement, and contributions that strengthen the Digital Studies program.

Selection Criteria

The review committee considers nominees who demonstrate one or more of the following:

• Innovation in pedagogy and curriculum development

• Inclusive and accessible teaching practices

• Meaningful student engagement and mentorship

• Contributions that advance the mission and interdisciplinary nature of Digital Studies

How to Apply

The Digital Studies Institute accepts nominations for the Nakamura Exceptional Teaching (NET) Award annually, beginning in the Winter semester. A call for applications is sent via email in early February each year, with a mid-April application deadline. Award decisions are made no later than late June. 

Application materials should be submitted via email to Sarah Torsch, DSI Academic Program Specialist, at dsi-studentservices@umich.edu. Application materials should include:

• A brief cover letter (1-2 pages) explaining how the applicant’s teaching demonstrates clear innovation or exceptional service.

• Supporting materials that showcase, highlight, or represent the qualities and/or activities discussed in the cover letter.

• Optional - A letter of support from a student that affirms the innovation and/or service discussed in the cover letter.
