Changes to Computing Education Are Certain.  How So? Less So.

Michigan Daily Staff Reporter, Kayla Lugo,  writes on national and state efforts to mandate general computing education in high schools. Questions of how high schools and communities would meet these challenges (funding, teacher training, curriculum/standards) -- as well as making that education accessible to everyone -- are discussed.

Pointing toward support for alternative outcomes as educators in computing, the director of The Program in Computing for the Arts and Scieneces Mark Guzdial suggested: "It’s a danger if the high school computer science classes are only about becoming a professional software developer; then there’s a danger that we’re just trying to create more computer science majors, as opposed to increasing computational literacy for everybody.”"

The article aslo suggested earlier introduction in high school would not make later training unnecessary, but rather "level the ground a little bit" by introduing the possiblity of exploring CS as a possibility for students from varied backgrounds.
