If you’re anything like me, you enjoy taking adventures, like taking your entire life and studies to another part of the world. But before you do that, there are a few things you should know and do. Take it from someone who just studied abroad this past summer doing the program Global Health and Development Policy in Nyon, Switzerland.
Before you leave home, say goodbye to your close ones. Give a hug to as many of them as you can. As great as your adventures will be, there will be times when you miss your loved ones and just want to talk to them to tell them all about your days. Also, make sure to take your laundry situation into account while packing. If you know you will have access to a form of laundry, you may want to pack light. Of course, bring the essentials and bring what you would need for the weather you will experience. But I recommend leaving extra space in your suitcase(s). The last thing you want to worry about is how to bring home all of the cool souvenirs you’ve collected while abroad.
While you’re away, dream big. Travel to all of the places you took note of. Spend your weekends in a balanced way: study for your classes, but remember to stop and breathe. I found myself taking long walks and train rides over my weekends, having dinner with friends I had made in my program, and going to places that I personally really wanted to see. But listen to yourself when you’re tired too. It’s totally ok and normal to have a weekend where you just want to sleep, read a book, or catch up on work in the comfort of your living space. Do what you want, but most importantly, do what you need to do.
When you’re preparing to come home, make the most of every last moment you have before you officially leave. Say goodbye to the educators you’ve made connections with and to the new friends you have made. Try not to think just about the logistics of getting back home or everything you have to pick back up once returning home. Live in the moment so you can remember your experience well. I hope this helps you, the future abroad wolverines! I had an unforgettable experience, and I know you will too.
