Anghely in Barcelona, Spain at Park Guell

Going to Barcelona as a first-generation Latina was not easy. It was my first time traveling abroad, and honestly, I had no idea what to expect. From the moment I landed, the city felt alive, vibrant, and completely different from anywhere I had ever been. Navigating unfamiliar streets, practicing my Spanish, and adjusting to new customs pushed me out of my comfort zone. At the same time, my own culture and identity were embraced everywhere I went, and I felt proud to bring my background into every interaction. If I could do it all over again, I absolutely would.

Through Sage Corps, I had the incredible opportunity to work at KoiKollektiv, a creative studio that specializes in immersive storytelling with AR and VR. Every day I learned something new about collaboration, problem-solving, and building experiences that blend creativity and technology. Balancing work with exploring the city made each day feel full and meaningful. I grew not only professionally but also mentally, learning to adapt, stay curious, and embrace challenges I never imagined facing.

When I wasn’t at KoiKollektiv, I was out discovering Barcelona. I wandered through Park Güell, marveled at Gaudí’s Sagrada Família, and admired the architecture at Casa Batlló and Casa Vicens. I soaked in the views from Tibidabo’s Ferris Wheel, the Rooftop at Las Arenas, and Bunkers del Carmel. I strolled through cultural gems like the Picasso Museum, Palau de la Música Catalana, and the Opera House. Charming neighborhoods like Gràcia and Umbrella Street offered quiet moments of discovery, while markets like La Boqueria and plazas such as Plaça Reial gave me a taste of local life. And of course, chocolate and churros became a must-have after every adventure.

Some of my favorite moments came from getting lost and meeting new people. Every wrong turn led to a new street, a hidden café, or a conversation I would have never had otherwise. My biggest advice for anyone traveling abroad is to explore fearlessly. Let yourself wander, be curious, and embrace the unexpected. At the same time, take every opportunity your internship offers. At KoiKollektiv, I grew in ways I didn’t anticipate, building confidence and learning to see the world through a new lens.

Barcelona taught me lessons I’ll carry forever: the importance of adaptability, the joy of stepping outside your comfort zone, and the excitement of connecting with a new culture while staying true to who you are. Professional growth and personal exploration went hand in hand, and every moment—both challenging and beautiful—made the experience unforgettable.

Looking back, this trip was more than a city, a company, or a list of landmarks. It was a chance to grow as a person, a professional, and a global citizen. I navigated a foreign city, adapted to a new culture, and celebrated my identity while learning from another. If I could do it all over again, I wouldn’t hesitate. Barcelona wasn’t just a destination. It was an experience like no other.
