Program Structure

Are you interested in building your leadership skills?

The Barger Leadership Institute (BLI) is a student-powered, faculty-guided community dedicated to leadership learning through flexible programming that builds on your liberal arts education. Our program structure allows members to create their own pathway through the institute’s various opportunities and activities.

Students may enter the BLI community by becoming a member at any point in their undergraduate career. After becoming a BLI member, students enroll and complete one of our foundational courses — ALA Leadership Lab or ALA Foundations in Leadership. The courses are open to any undergrad at the University of Michigan.

Once members complete the ALA Leadership Lab or ALA Foundations in Leadership, they become Leadership Fellows and can create their own pathway through our various funding and programming opportunities.

The Leadership Fellows program is the co-curricular core of the Barger Leadership Institute’s educational activities. We seek to engage students from any program on campus at every stage of their undergraduate careers in BLI activities. These activities are designed to inspire promising undergraduates to develop their knowledge and skills through rich experiences that they help to devise. The BLI is a campus-wide community of emerging student leaders and the program involves additional leadership and social activities designed by faculty, staff and students.
