Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives in Cognitive Science

Please note that this course is only offered during Winter Term. Students with previous Cognitive Science experience are encouraged to apply.


This seminar course will explore foundations and frontiers of cognitive science, focusing on topics shaped by research interests of enrolled students (who we anticipate will represent multiple disciplines and departments). The course will be organized in part around the Cognitive Science seminar series, where students will participate with presentations of their own research or research proposals. We will complement the Series presentations with readings and discussion of both enduring foundational ideas, and cutting edge work and methods at the frontiers. A key aim of the course is to learn how to effectively present our research to scientists outside our own subfields, and to learn how to have fruitful cross-disciplinary discourse. 


We will select topics based on our joint interests from a broad set, including (but not limited to) concepts and categories; levels of theoretical explanation; Bayesian and probabilistic models; neural networks and deep learning; emergentism; cognitive architectures; (bounded) rational analysis; philosophy of mind; language processing; cognition across the lifespan; computational neuroscience; memory; perception; generative linguistics; decision making; problem solving; innateness; causality; game theory; cooperation; social cognition; moral decisions; infant cognition and development; individual differences; computational psychiatry; learning and education; human-computer-interaction; reinforcement learning.
