Whether conducting research, working at an internship, or studying abroad, students may be expected to obtain their housing independently. When the destination may be halfway around the world, how can it be done well?
Below are tips to help find good housing abroad:
- If you have a host (such as a university sponsor or internship provider) abroad, it is recommended to reach out to them first to see what past students have done and see if they have any recommendations.
- Decide what kind of housing you want (homestay, dorm, apartment with locals, etc) and where you would like to be located as parameters for your search.
- If you are signing a contract in a foreign language, make sure you know what it says.
- Research what safe housing looks like in your host country.
