Where did you transfer from?
Henry Ford College
Tell us about your transfer journey.
I did not start college right away. After graduating high school, I decided to take a gap year. After all, I was unsure if college was the right path for me because I would be a first-generation student, and I was uncertain about how the experience would be and if I could succeed. During that gap year, I spent time visiting family in California and all over Mexico. My family is one of the most influential people in life. I have five older sisters and a bunch of nieces and nephews.
With their support, I ultimately decided that I wanted to continue my education and enrolled in my local community college to grasp the idea of what college would be like. I ended up graduating from Henry Ford College with an associates degree in Business Administration and Liberal Arts. During my time at HFC, I discovered the Transfer Bridges program and spoke to a student recruiting coordinator, which helped me get started in the application process.
Why did you choose to transfer to the University of Michigan?
I chose the University of Michigan because it is ranked the number one public university in the U.S. Along with all the research opportunities that it has to offer. I am so excited to be a part of the research. I also chose U of M because of the number of resources that are available to students. Whatever a person might be going through, there is usually a source of support to help you.
Based on your personal experience, what is the one thing you want to tell new transfer students?
Be patient with yourself. This is a big transition, and it will take time to adjust, but that is okay. Anything new involves some discomfort. The University of Michigan offers tons of resources to help you with whatever type of support you need, from academics to your well-being. Do not be afraid of seeking help; sometimes, that is what someone needs. Don’t forget to breathe. You belong here.
How did you make friends and meet other students on campus?
I was lucky enough to be a part of the Transfer Bridges program and meet some incredible people through there. Also, through M-Connect, which is a transfer community that helps students transition go smoothly. Meeting people who have the same major has helped because then both can coordinate taking classes together and be able to study and collaborate.
What is your favorite part about being an LSA transfer student?
LSA gives transfer students a wonderful atmosphere to meet people who have things in common with each other. The Transfer Student Center offers students a sense of belonging to the school. Also, having services like the Opportunity Hub and aMplify nights is a wonderful place to meet new people and help you excel.
What do you know now that you wished you knew before transferring to the University of Michigan?
What I wished I knew before transferring was it might not be the most effortless transition, but that’s okay. It’s normal to feel a little out of place because this will be a new experience. As nerve-racking as it can be, it can also be an exciting experience. If you find yourself struggling, please do not be afraid to vocalize it and look for assistance and support to help you through it.
Why did you choose your specific major(s)?
I was initially going to major in Economics, but after taking a few courses in Psychology at Henry Ford College in my last semesters there, I never felt more captivated by a subject. I ultimately chose Psychology and Sociology because I love learning about what motivates humans to behave the way they do and how the brain's processes information as we mature. I also find it rewarding when I connect with individuals and can support others wherever I can.
