Giving Opportunities

As LSA’s only interdepartmental MA program in the humanities, Transcultural Studies (TCS) offers ambitious LSA undergraduates a unique opportunity to develop versatile skillsets for an interconnected world and to earn a U-M graduate degree with just one additional year of study beyond the BA. In advanced courses offered by eleven participating LSA departments including American Culture, Anthropology, Asian Languages and Cultures, English, History, and Romance Languages, TCS degree candidates join doctoral students in exploring how ideas and practices migrate across cultural boundaries, and how they are adapted and repurposed along the way. Learning to think critically and capaciously about the workings of power in relation to translation, encounter, and cultural change prepares TCS students for post-graduation pathways in the many academic, nonprofit, and business contexts where intercultural competencies are increasingly at a premium.

“The Transcultural Studies Program provides a compelling new model for thinking about graduate-level education in the humanities. At a time of continued contraction in the tenure track faculty job market, students seeking advanced training in humanities fields are increasingly seeking out more compact and versatile alternatives to long-haul PhD programs. LSA has demonstrated important leadership in making this accelerated MA program available to its most ambitious undergraduate students.” –David Porter, Director
