The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures hosted a recruitment event for its PhD program November 17-19, 2017. Thirteen juniors and seniors considering graduate study in Slavic langauges and literatures from Indiana University, Macalester College, Ohio State University, Pennsylvania State Universtiy, Stony Brook University, University of Chicago, University of Notre Dame, University of Texas-Austin, University of Virginia, Wayne State University, and Williams College participated.

Events were organized to give the students a taste of what it is like to be in graduate school, from film screenings to round table discussions. Professor Michael Makin and PhD candidate Christopher Fort spoke in a panel on Russian culture. Language program director Svitlana Rogovyk, PhD candidate Natasha McCauley, and lecturer Eugene Bondarenko led a round table on teaching Russian. Assistant Professor Tatjana Aleksic and PhD students Alena Aniskiewicz and Haley Laurila spoke in a panel covering areas of Slavic study beyond Russia. Professor Benjamin Paloff moderated a round table discussion of translation with PhD students Christopher Fort, Grace Mahoney, Michael Martin, and Jason Wagner.

The participants were able to view the special screening of Moscow's Vakhtangov Theatre's production of Alexander Pushkin's Eugene Onegin. Attendees were able to talk with Chair and Professor Mihail Krutikov and Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies Olga Maiorova about how U-M's Slavic PhD program works. Opportunities for recreation and socializing were provided as well.
