As a U-M student, you have access to a host of apps and services through Information and Technology Services (ITS).
While you may be most familiar with Google Docs and Google Sheets, you should absolutely take advantage of the free suite of Microsoft Office Apps through your U-M email to gain access to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and more. These programs have many more features and abilities than the Google Sheets, Google Docs, and Google Slides counterparts. You will also be required to use Microsoft Excel in QMSS courses.
How to download Microsoft Office:
- Go to portal.office.com.
- Enter your UMICH email address (i.e., uniqname@umich.edu) at the Microsoft sign-in prompt and click Next.
- Sign in using your UMICH password on the next screen.
- Authenticate with Duo two-factor authentication, if prompted.
- You can technically use the applications online, but we highly recommend downloading them to your personal computer. To download the apps directly to your computer, click Install Office in the upper right corner and select Office 365 apps.
- Open the file and follow the setup instructions.
If you use a Windows computer, you may receive an error message that says "Something went wrong. Your account was not set up on this device because device management could not be enabled." If this is the case, you will need to do a bit of troubleshooting. Instructions for managing this error can be found on the ITS website here.
For any other issues with your Microsoft Office 365 Apps through U-M, contact Information and Technology Services (ITS).
