About
Ishan Pal Singh is a Lecturer IV in Architecture and Director of the Taubman Visualization Lab (TVLab) at the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He also serves as design technologist for the college’s Academic Initiatives team. A licensed architect in India, he founded the architecture and research practice PAL in 2016 after earning his Bachelor of Architecture at Sushant School of Architecture. He completed his Master of Architecture at Michigan in 2020.
Singh’s practice examines how media technologies shape architectural perception, authorship, and collective participation. Working across artificial intelligence, extended reality, and architectural assemblies, he investigates the cultural assumptions embedded in digital tools and how spatial storytelling can make social and environmental systems perceptible. He approaches architecture as a medium through which people can question established narratives and participate in shaping their surroundings.
Through the TVLab and his own courses, Singh develops and tests alternative approaches to architectural learning across studios, programmes, and degree levels, reaching more than 300 students annually. His work makes emerging media accessible through teaching, research support, and public programming. At the lab, he has led initiatives including the TVLife faculty grant programme, the exhibitions A Thing or 2 and Mixed Results, and the lecture series AI in the Wild.
His honours include the Alpha Rho Chi Medal and an IIDA Best of Asia Pacific Design Award. He is a co-recipient of Michigan’s Presidential Award for Understanding Democracy, the U-M Arts Initiative’s Arts Research: Incubation and Acceleration (ARIA) grant (exhibited at the Newlab Detroit), and a 2026 Faculty Micro-Exhibition Grant (exhibited at Taubman). Working with Academic Initiatives, he helped secure the Gensler Gift Fund for AI Excellence in the Design Process.
