Funding Opportunities

The Digital Studies Institute offers annual funding opportunities for currently enrolled graduate certificate students to support digital studies research, writing, and professional development. These opportunities are designed to help students advance their research projects, access specialized resources, and participate in relevant workshops and training programs.

DSI funding opportunities include the following two categories:

Writing and Project Stipends

The DSI offers $1,000 writing and project stipends to support graduate certificate students as they develop and advance their digital studies research and writing projects.

Important eligibility note: The $1,000 writing and project stipend may be awarded to a student only once during their academic career.

Digital Studies Research and Professional Development Award

The DSI offers awards of up to $1,200 to support research-related expenses and professional development activities connected to students' digital studies work.

Eligible expenses may include:

  • Research equipment and software: Purchase of specialized equipment or software licenses needed for digital studies research.

  • Proprietary data access: Fees for accessing proprietary datasets relevant to a student's research.

  • Workshops and summer institutes: Travel and tuition expenses for digital studies workshops, including DSI's Digital IDEAS Summer Institute, as well as relevant programs and summer institutes offered outside the University of Michigan.

Students may apply for general research and professional development awards multiple times.

Funding Application Deadline

Every academic year, currently enrolled DSI graduate certificate students are invited to apply for funding in either of the categories described above.

  • Application deadline: Early November

  • Anticipated fund disbursement: Mid-December
