FAQ for Students

China Internship Initiative

Spend your summer gaining invaluable experience and building new international connections in the world’s most populous country and second largest economy! Internships are hosted by employer organizations with connections with the University of Michigan who are interested in talented U-M students. You will spend 6 – 8 weeks gaining new skills, making new connections, developing your language proficiency and experiencing life in a vibrant Chinese environment.

How long are the internships?

Internships are usually for 8 weeks, but can be different lengths if the employer and student intern both agree. The minimum is 6 weeks. Interns work 25 - 40 hours a week.

When do they start?

Typically internships happen between May 15 to August 15.

How do I apply?

  1. Starting October 15, internship position description(s) and other relevant details will be posted on the LRCCS website. New opportunities will be added on a rolling basis through December. 15.
  2. By February 10, apply for internships based on your interests and background.  Your applications will be shared with potential employers, and interviews will be arranged by employers directly. Watch your email for potential interview invitations.
  3. By March 10, receive internship offers. After being selected you have one week to decide before the offer is made to another student.
  4. By March 15, apply for LRCCS internship fellowships to help defray the cost of internship.
  5. By April 30, attend the pre-departure orientation by the UM International Center, and complete the required health & safety procedures.
  6. From May to August: On-site internship
  7. By September 30, complete the internship report.

What are my responsibilities if I accept an internship?

  • Work: Scope of your job, working hours and location will be agreed by both you and your employer prior to internship. Both sides should adhere to that agreement.
  • Report and photos: After the internship concludes, you will be required to write an internship report, with two pictures of yourself “in action” during your internship. You may also be selected to share your internship experience with other U-M students that interned for the summer, during the following Fall semester.
