Meet the 2026 Summer in South Asia fellows!
Koen Aldridge
My name is Koen Aldridge, and I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan, majoring in Biology, Health and Society on the pre-medical track. I am passionate about global health, and want to use my undergraduate career to learn as much as I can, setting myself up as a well rounded physician. I also love to connect with people. If you ever see me on the street and have questions, please say hello! Outside of academics, I love nature walks, cooking, reading, and working out. I look forward to helping at a support home this summer, along with contributing to local education initiatives!
Me Me Aunglin
Hello. My name is Me Me, and I’m a sophomore studying Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience, and minoring in the History of Medicine and Health. I am passionate about promoting adolescent and infant wellbeing, but this remains a challenge in low-resource communities where healthcare is primarily urban-serving. My time in India will be targeted towards understanding healthcare practices in rural areas, in relation to maternal health outcomes and neonatal mortality. Fortunately, ARTH Foundation has provided an exciting opportunity to help highlight my passion in rural Rajasthan this summer! You can find me stuck in a book, painting, or on a shopping spree (will be bringing an empty suitcase for India as we speak).
Maekayla Dimatulac
Kumusta. Håfa Adai. Hello! My name is Maekayla Dimatulac. I am a third year undergraduate pursuing a degree in sociology, with a submajor in law, justice, and social change, and a growing interest in education and policy. My academic interests are grounded in understanding how systems shape people’s opportunities, especially in education, and how policy can be leveraged to create more equitable outcomes. Alongside this, I’m deeply interested in community engagement and the role of places like museums as spaces for learning, dialogue, and connection, exploring how public institutions can foster inclusive, meaningful experiences for diverse audiences.
Outside of academics, I try to stay connected to community in more everyday ways through playing sports like joining an IM team with my friends or cultural spaces/orgs like FASA or OSA or just spending time with people I care about. I enjoy the outdoors like the beach and going for walks/hikes and cafe hopping.
Shravya Ghantasala
Hello! My name is Shravya (she/her), and I am a third-year student at the University of Michigan studying Public Health Sciences with a minor in Social Work. I am very passionate about mitigating health disparities, criminal justice, and doing community-engaged work. I am interested in contributing to program evaluation and process improvement efforts with health systems or non-profits, working with incarcerated people, or working with women and kids. On campus, I work as a personal trainer, engage in harm reduction advocacy, and serve as a workshop facilitator through the Prison Creative Arts Project. In my free time, I like to listen to music and do photography. I am very excited to learn and grow from the communities in India I’ll get to work with through this fellowship!
Shivarni Govind
Hi! My name is Shivarni Govind and I’m currently a sophomore majoring in public health on the pre-medical track. I’m extremely interested in disability health and hope to explore the intersection of physical medicine and rehabilitation with public health! This summer, I’m excited to intern at a rehabilitation center in a hospital located in Chennai, India, where I will shadow physicians working with patients with disabilities and gain insight into a different healthcare system. I will also be working with a nonprofit organization that supports individuals with disabilities through employment assistance and recreational activities. I’m really looking forward to learning from these experiences and better understanding how clinical care and community-based efforts can come together to improve quality of life. I’m also excited to explore Chennai on my own and experience the city’s vibrant culture!
Amatullah Hakim
Hi! I'm Amatullah Hakim and I am studying international studies and anthropology, with a focus in global health. I am interested in working on health education and resource access as well as nutrition related intervention development. Outside of academics, I am involved with the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter here on the U-M campus, as well as the United Asian American Association, through which we do political action and education work related to anti-imperialism in the Global South. As someone whose family is from India, I am excited to take this opportunity to explore the country in a new way, by learning about the current health landscape in Mumbai from people encountering it while experiencing the intricacies of the city and its history.
Leopold Hoang
My name is Leopold Hoang, and I am a junior majoring in biochemistry with a minor in Arabic studies. I am interested in reducing the barriers to quality healthcare, especially patient access across rural areas and underserved groups. I hope to become a physician committed to addressing global health issues such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. I am excited to work with Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement in Mysore to experience firsthand the real-world impact of healthcare delivery in urban and rural communities. India’s dynamic landscapes and diverse healthcare challenges present a unique educational opportunity to appreciate how culture shapes care. In my free time, I enjoy the outdoors, working out, and anything involving food.
Ruhi Kulkarni
My name is Ruhi Kulkarni, and I am a sophomore at the University of Michigan studying international studies (political economy and development) with a minor in the School of Information. I am interested in the use of technology to bridge disparities between the Global North and South, and I hope to pursue a career in foreign policy and diplomacy, specifically in the South and Southeast Asian regions. This summer, I will be working with eSamudaay in Bangalore, which is a startup focused on digitally empowering local entrepreneurship. Outside of academics, I love reading, junk journaling, trying new foods, and spending time outdoors.
