CMENAS builds a collegial and intellectually invigorating learning community open to all Michigan and regional K-14 educators!
The Middle East North Africa Reading Cohort (MENA-RC) develops educators’ understanding and appreciation of the region’s history and culture, situating them in a broader, global context. In three once-a-month sessions, the MENA-RC will engage in lively and robust two-hour discussions of scholarly book-length contributions to the field of Middle Eastern and/or North African history and culture.
Book discussions and conversations will be held in person (public-health conditions permitting) and facilitated by Rima Hassouneh, CMENAS Outreach Coordinator. Historians at U-M or other universities may occasionally join sessions.
Program perks include free State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs) from the Michigan Department of Education, as well as reimbursements for:
- Book Purchases
- Travel to/from U-M, Ann Arbor
- Overnight Lodging (under special circumstances)
- Tickets and Fees to cultural events, artistic performances, and museum visits related to the Middle East and North Africa
Educators serving in under-resourced and/or rural school districts or community colleges are especially encouraged to apply.
Tentative Schedule: October 2022, March 2023, and May 2023.
Middle East North Africa Reading Cohort is open to all K-12 in-service teachers and community college faculty in Michigan. Space is limited.
Note: The 2022-23 Middle East North Africa Reading Cohort will be held contingent on Title VI funding awarded by the U.S. Department of Education to the National Resource Center at CMENAS.
