Luiza Duarte Caetano

I am interested in the relationship between art and politics. In my dissertation, I focus on literary works from a variety of genres, national traditions and epochs whose common theme is France's revolutionary history, in particular the period of the Terror (1793) and the Paris Commune (1871). I investigate how each work translates, adds to, or challenges their author's political agendas, first in light of the context that each author is responding to. Next, I ask what place their aesthetic and political praxis might occupy, more broadly,  in the history of literature and revolution. Ultimately, I seek to discover if (and how) these authors' theories and their practices can contribute to indicate new pathways for the contemporary deadends of politically-engaged art in late capitalism.
