On March 12, 2021, a Mellon Sawyer Seminar convened by Marlon James Sales (UM Postdoctoral Fellow in Critical Translation Studies) gathered scholars from around the world via zoom to discuss Hispanofilipino Literature and the Archive in the US Midwest.
Presentations by panelists focused on the archive as a site of translation and historical memory as a multilingual construct, focusing specifically on Hispanofilipino texts in the libraries of the University of Michigan and the broader Midwest.
In addition the public was invited to a webinar featuring a book talk between Harold Augenbraum, editor, translator, and former executive director of the National Book Foundation, and award-winning author Gina Apostol.
The day's events concluded with the launch of a virtual exhibit about the history of translation in Filipino literature in Spanish, using materials from various libraries and archives, especially at the University of Michigan.
