Emily Goedde (Comp Lit Ph.D. 2015) has translated Liang Hong's 2010 best-selling work of non-fiction, China in One Village: The Story of One Town and the Changing World. Published by Verso Press, the translation was reviewed in The New York Times (Ian Johnson, "How to Destroy a Village," June 22, 2021).
In June 2021 Emily participated in a panel with Liang Hong sponsored by the Center for Asian Studies at UC Irvine: "China in One Village: A Conversation on Literature and Translation in a Changing World." The panel included the author and the translator and several scholars in Chinese cultural studies, to discuss the response-ability of literature and translation to drastic social changes.
