CHRISTOPHER DAVIS defended his doctoral dissertation in Comparative Literature in July 2011: “Scribes and Singers: Latin Models of Authority and the Compilation of Troubadour Songbooks.” He was awarded a 2012 ACLS Postdoctoral Fellowship to teach in the French Department at UC Berkeley.
SEBASTIAN FERRARI defended his doctoral dissertation in Comparative Literature in April 2012: “Imagining the Community: Documentary Aesthetic in Roberto Bolano and Alfredo Jaar.” Sebastian has accepted the position of Visiting Assistant Professor to teach Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Kalamazoo College.
NAHOKO FUKUSHIMA defended her doctoral dissertation in Comparative Literature in August 2011: “’Sharebon’ and the Courtesans: A Phase Edo Aesstheticism as the Potlatch/Splash of Ideology.” She accepted the position of Associate Professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture, to teach English and Comparative Literature and Culture.
MELISSA GELINAS co-presented a paper for the 2012 ACLA conference at Brown University: “Negotiating Crisis in Leonardo Padura and David Foster Wallace: Towards a Practical Model of Postmodernism.”
EMILY GOEDDE received a Comparative Literature Study Abroad Fellowship to study in Taiwan during 2012-13.
OLGA GRECO presented a paper for the 2012 ACLA conference at Brown University: “Russia’s Rome(s): Uses and Abuses of ‘Rome’ in Muscovite and Petrine Russia.”
SARA GREWAL was awarded a 2012-13 Fulbright Scholarship to pursue research in India.

CORINA KESLER completed her doctoral dissertation in Comparative Literature: “Hail Utopia: Communist, Mystical and Post-Colonial Voices: Retrospectives and Future Promises.”
HARRY KASHDAN was awarded a FLAS Fellowship to study Arabic in 2012-13.
HILARY LEVINSON presented a paper for the 2012 ACLA conference at Brown University: “Like Father, Like Son: Exile and Inheritance in Roberto Brodsky’s Bosque Quemado.” She received a Comparative Literature Study Abroad Fellowship to study in Latin America in Winter 2013.

CASSIE MIURA presented a paper for the 2012 ACLA conference at Brown University: “Democritus Jr. and the Laughter of Melancholy.” She received a Comparative Literature Study Abroad Fellowship and a Rackham International Research Award to study in France and England during 2012-13.
MATTHEW PFAFF was awarded a Rackham One Term Dissertation Fellowship for Fall 2012.
RICHARD PIERRE presented a paper for the 2012 ACLA conference at Brown University: “Being with the Inhuman: Nietzschean Subjectivity and the Lyric of Stone.” He was named a Sweetland Writing Fellow for 2012-13.

JOHN ROWLAND defended his doctoral dissertation in Comparative Literature in April 2012: “Virtual Realities: Virtue and Fantasies of Social-Material Community in British Poetry and Criticism, 1725-1785.”

WILLIAM STROEBEL won the 2011 Best Graduate Student Essay Prize of the Modern Greek Studies Association, for “Narrating the Disaster: Trauma and National Discourses in Elias Venezis ‘To Noumero 31328’ and Kosmas Politsis ‘Stou Hadjifrangou.’” He presented a paper for the 2012 ACLA conference at Brown University: “Imagining Materiality: Objects and Community in Ahmet Hamdi Tampinar’s Huzur and Melpo Axioti’s To Spiti Mou.” He received a Rackham Centennial Fellowship for Spring/Summer 2012.
CORINE TACHTIRIS defended her doctoral dissertation in April 2012: “Branding World Literature: The Global Circulation of Authors in Translation.” Her article, “Relation and Identity: Milan Kundera and Dany Leferriere Redefine the World” was published in The Comparatist 36 (2012). She was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship for 2012-2013, to teach in the French Department at Kalamazoo College.
ORIAN ZAKAI defended her doctoral dissertation in July 2012: "Zion of their Own: Hebrew Women's Nationalist Writing (1896-1956)." Orian was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Frankel Center for Judaic Studies for 2012-13.
BARBARA ZUKOWSKI was awarded a FLAS Fellowship to study Polish for 2012-13.
