WELCOME TO "A Year of Comparison"
The Department of Comparative Literature has designated 2010-2011 as our "Year of Comparison." Our objective is to engage with other departments in critical discussion about the idea of comparison and the use of comparative methodologies across disciplines.
During this theme year we will consider a broad range of questions posed by comparative projects. What are the various disciplinary histories of comparative work? What is at stake in comparison today? Do "comparatists" really compare? What do they compare, and to what end? Is "comparativism" a way of doing theory, or another name for interdisciplinarity? What logics of comparison are implicit in terms such as "international," "transnational," "cross-cultural," and "global"?
We invite faculty and students at the University of Michigan to submit PROPOSALS for funding activities on campus that are related to our theme year. We will also list undergraduate and graduate COURSES that focus on comparative methodologies, and host a series of EVENTS related to the theme of comparison.
