The Author’s Forum Presents: A Conversation with Amitav Ghosh and Anton Shammas, with Jonathan Freedman.
In keeping with the spirit of the LSA Translation Theme Semester, tonight’s forum will begin with a discussion of the Celebrating Tagore event the night before, moving into issues of translation.
An internationally bestselling author, Amitav Ghosh is the U-M MFA Writing Program’s Zell Distinguished International Writer in Residence. Most recently, he is the author of River of Smoke, the second volume of a projected series of novels, The Ibis Trilogy.
Anton Shammas is professor of comparative literature, modern Middle Eastern literature, and Near Eastern studies at the University of Michigan. He is the author of three books of poetry (in Hebrew and Arabic); two plays; many essays in English, Hebrew and Arabic; and a novel, Arabesques, originally published in Hebrew (1986) and translated into eight languages
Jonathan Freedman is Marvin Felheim Collegiate Professor of English, American Studies and Judaic Studies. His books include The Temple of Culture: Assimilation and Anti-Semitism in Literary Anglo-America (Oxford University Press, 2000) and Jewish in America (with Sara Blair) (University of Michigan Press, 2004).
