Guest Speaker: Sarita See, Assistant Professor of American Culture and English.Centered on the work of two contemporary Filipino American artists Paul Pfeiffer and Reanne Estrada, this presentation will investigate the politics of abstraction by analyzing the multiple meanings of the terms ?abstract? and ?abstraction? as they are used to evaluate the works of artists of color in the United States. Paul Pfeiffer is a digital and installation artist based in New York City who first gained national attention at the 2001 Whitney Biennial for his use of computer imaging tools to display, erase, and modify the human figure. Reanne Estrada's work features simple, stark geometrical shapes made of degradable material like packing tape, dental floss, and soap.
