Last year marked an important milestone for the Cognitive Science undergraduate major: in April 2019, the number of declared majors passed the 200 mark, making Cognitive Science one of the 20 biggest majors in LSA, and along with Data Sciences, the fastest growing major at Michigan! This rapid growth brings new opportunities and resources.

 

New Faces

The Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science has recently added several new scholars:

Mara Bollard, Lecturer and Assistant Director

U-M alum Dr. Mara Bollard (PhD 2018, Philosophy) will help provide administrative oversight of the major, new energy and ideas, and exciting new upper-division courses. Dr. Bollard and Professor Chandra Sripada will be teaching the major’s introductory course, COGSCI200, to 350 students this Fall.   

Emily Atkinson, Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Dr. Atkinson is an alum of Johns Hopkins University and Georgetown University. She coordinates the biweekly Cognitive Science Seminar Series and will work with Dr. Julie Boland in the U-M Department of Psychology researching how various cognitive factors affect sentence comprehension in real time in both adults and children. 

Wade Munroe, Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Dr. Munroe is an alum of Indiana University, Western Michigan University, and Vassar College. His major research projects lie at the intersection of epistemology, philosophy of psychology, and ethics.

As the 2019-20 academic year begins, plans are underway for several notable Cognitive Science events: 

  • Welcome Back Information Session for current students on Monday, September 30, featuring an overview of important curriculum changes taking effect in Fall 2019 and a preview of opportunities and events.
  • Cognitive Science Open House for prospective students on Tuesday, November 5, from 12-3 p.m. 
  • Cognitive Science Seminar Series, a biweekly forum for informal presentations and networking 
  • 10th Anniversary Weinberg Symposium, April 10-11, 2020, featuring some of the most influential researchers in the field of Cognitive Science.
